A former town in Shimomashiki County in central Kumamoto Prefecture. It borders the south of Kumamoto City across the Midorikawa River. Most of the cultivated land is paddy fields, and rice is the main crop. Mt. Kihara is located in the south, and Kihara Fudoson is located at the foot of the mountain. The Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 3 run north and south through the center of the town.
