A writer from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Born in North Hamgyong Province. After liberation, he was active in the Democratic Youth League, but during the Korean War he joined the Korean People's Army and began his literary studies while taking up a gun on the front lines. He was recommended to enter Pyongyang Normal University in 1952, and after graduating in 1957, he wrote novels while working in the publishing department. He received the Kim Il-sung Prize for his creative achievements, and as a writer popular with the younger generation, he devoted himself to writing. His representative works include the short story Companions (1960), which depicts a new image of humanity in the Cheorliema era, as well as the novels The Forest Rusts (1965) and Burning Season (1970), which depict the anti-Japanese armed struggle.

朝鮮民主主義人民共和国の作家。咸鏡北道生れ。解放後,民主青年同盟で活動したが,朝鮮戦争期に朝鮮人民軍に入隊,戦線で銃をとりながら文学修業を始めた。1952年平壌師範大学に推されて入学,57年卒業後は出版部門で活動するかたわら小説を書く。創作の功績により金日成賞を獲得,若い世代に人気のある作家として執筆に専念。代表作に千里馬(チヨンリマ)時代の新しい人間像を描いた短編《道づれ》(1960)のほか,抗日武装闘争を内容とする長編《森はざわめく》(1965),《燃える季節》(1970)など。
