Wang Chen (English spelling)

Japanese: 王宸 - おうしん（英語表記）Wáng Chén

A literati painter during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty. His pen name was Zining and his pseudonym was Pengxin. He was from Taicang, Jiangsu Province. He was the great-grandson of Wang Yuanqi, a member of the Qing dynasty establishment. Under the umbrella of Wang Yuanqi's Loudong school, the conservative, imitative landscape paintings of the Qing Painting Academy never went beyond the exhausted style of the Loudong school, and he never managed to establish his own style. His brushwork was rough, with ink layered on top of each other, but in his later years it became even rougher, and his compositions lacked grandiosity. He is the author of 10 volumes of Erin Zakari. 清の乾隆期の文人画家。字は子凝，号は蓬心。江蘇省太倉の人。清朝体制派のひとり王原祁（おうげんき）の曾孫。王原祁の婁東（ろうとう）派の傘下で清朝画院の保守的，臨摹（りんも）的な山水画は婁東派の枯渇した画調の域を出ることなく，ついに独自の画風を打ち立てるに至らなかった。用筆は墨汁を重ね粗荒さが目立つが，晩年はさらに枯れ，画面の構成には遠大さが欠けていた。著に《絵林伐材》10巻がある。【遠藤光一】
