A common name for a group of poems that appear in the Manyoshu. There are two types: poems that are themselves part of a legend, such as the poem about the Sakurago legend in Volume 16 of the Manyoshu, and poems that are reminiscent of a legend written by a poet, but it is necessary to distinguish between the two. Among the Manyo poets, Takahashi Mushimaro's four legendary reminiscence poems (the legends of Mizunoe no Ura no Shimako (Urashima Taro), Kamitsubusa no Sue no Tamana, Katsushikanomama no Otome (Mama Tekona), and Unai Otome) Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
