Terni (English spelling)
Terni is the capital of the Province of Terni in Umbria, central Italy. It is located 80 km north-northeast of Rome, at the southwest foot of the Apennine Mountains, overlooking the Nera River. A settlement has existed here since the Neolithic period, and in Roman times it was called Interamuna (between the rivers). It has been a Papal State since the 14th century. Industry is thriving due to the power generated by the Marmore Falls, an artificial waterfall built by the Romans 6 km to the east. It produces steel, weapons, machinery, pasta (flour products), textiles, and other products. It also distributes agricultural products from the surrounding hills. It has Roman walls and an arena, as well as many cathedrals, churches, and palaces dating back to the Renaissance. Population: 113,324 (2011 estimate).
