Kurotani paper

Japanese: 黒谷紙 - くろたにがみ

This refers to various handmade Japanese paper, mainly kozo paper, found in Kurotani-cho and Yatsushiro-cho, Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture. Tamba and Tango were major paper-making regions in ancient times. Even during the Edo period, there were several paper-producing areas in this region, including those that produced official paper such as hosho and sugihara paper, and those that produced shoji paper and umbrella paper for the surrounding rural areas, but Kurotani paper took a unique path by directly connecting with users in urban areas. Kurotani originally belonged to the Yamaga domain, but later became a tenryo (a land of the feudal lord). Papermaking developed with the encouragement of the magistrate, and in 1859 (Ansei 6), with the help of the Kyoto kimono store Echigoya, a papermaker from Kyoto, Tomosaburo came to provide technical guidance.

京都府綾部市黒谷町および八代町ですかれている楮紙（こうぞがみ）を中心とした，各種の手すき和紙をいう。丹波･丹後は古代において主要な製紙国であった。江戸時代にも，この地方にはいくつかの紙の産地があり，公用紙である奉書や杉原紙をすくもの，周囲の農村向けの障子紙や傘紙をすくものなどがあったが，黒谷紙は直接，都会の使用者と結びつく独自の道をとった。黒谷ははじめ山家藩に属していたが，のちに天領となった。代官の奨励で製紙が発展し，1859年(安政6)には京都の呉服の越後屋の世話で，京都の紙すき職人友三郎が技術指導にきている。
