This crab belongs to the family Dungeness, order Decapoda, class Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. It is endemic to the Japanese waters, found from Tokyo Bay to Tosa Bay and Jeju Island in Korea, and has been recorded at depths of 30 meters or more, and even 100 meters. The carapace is over 10 centimeters wide, and the outline of the carapace is almost fan-shaped, reminiscent of a ginkgo leaf, as its name suggests. There are three teeth on the calyx, 12 teeth on the front edge of the carapace, and one tooth on the rear edge. The carapace is divided into the stomach area, heart area, and gill area, which are raised. There are five other species of Dungeness crabs known in Japan besides this one, but the most common are the common Dungeness crab C. amphioetus , which has teeth on the front edge of the carapace that are in contact with each other, and the common Dungeness crab C. gibbosulus , which has large and small teeth arranged alternately, and none of them are eaten. However, the common edible crab/C . pagurus found in Europe, the common edible crab/C . magister found on the Pacific coast of the United States, and the Jonah crab/C . borealis found on the Atlantic coast are all large species with a carapace width of up to 20 centimeters, are edible, and are highly valuable in the fishing industry.
