Shinobazu Pond

Japanese: 不忍池 - しのばずのいけ
Shinobazu Pond

A pond located in the southwestern corner of Ueno Park in the western part of Taito Ward, Tokyo. It has a circumference of about 2 kilometers and an area of about 2,500 square meters. It is a remnant of a former sea lake that formed in the valley between the plateaus of Ueno and Hongo. In contrast to Shinobazu Pond, Ueno is called Shinobu-ga-oka. When Tenkai built Kan'ei-ji Temple on Shinobu-ga-oka in 1625 (Kan'ei 2), he likened the pond to Lake Biwa and enshrined Benzaiten on an island in the pond, imitating Chikubu Island, and it became a famous spot. Currently, the pond is divided into three parts, with the north being a floating zoo branch of Ueno Zoo, the south a beautiful lotus pond, and the west a boat pond.
