Tsukigase [Village] - Tsukigase

Japanese: 月ヶ瀬[村] - つきがせ

A village in Soegami District, in the northeastern corner of Nara Prefecture. Population 2015 (1995). Located in a corner of the Yamato Plateau at an altitude of 200-300m, it is located in the gorge of the Nabari River. Agriculture is centered on tea cultivation, with a diversified management of paddy rice, shiitake mushrooms, etc., and it is one of the leading tea producing areas in the Kansai region. It is also widely known as a famous plum spot, and became famous for being visited by literary figures such as Rai Sanyo and Saito Setsudo in the late Edo period. Even today, Tsukigase Plum Grove (Nagasaki), which has about 6,000 plum trees, attracts many tourists. Plum processing is also popular, and in the past it produced Ubai, a type of plum used as a dye for Kyobeni.

奈良県北東端，添上郡の村。人口2015(1995)。標高200～300mの大和高原の一角を占め，名張川の峡谷部に位置する。農業は茶の栽培を中心として，水稲，シイタケなどの複合経営で，特に茶は関西でも有数の生産地である。また梅の名所として広く知られ，江戸後期に頼山陽，斎藤拙堂などの文人が訪れたことで有名となり，現在も梅樹約6000本を有する月ヶ瀬梅林(名)には多くの観光客が集まる。ウメの加工も盛んで，古くは京紅の染料となる烏梅（うばい）を産した。
