Takeshi Kaiko

Born: December 30, 1930, Osaka
[Died] December 9, 1989. Tokyo Novelist. Graduated from the Faculty of Law, Osaka City University. Received the Akutagawa Prize for "The Emperor's New Clothes" (1957). Like his previous work "Panic" (57), this work deals with the modern theme of "organization and individual" in industrial society. In "The Threepenny Opera" (59), he portrayed the life of homeless people and poor people in the former site of the military arsenal in Osaka. He later became known for his wide range of international activities, such as attending the Eichmann trial in Israel and going to the battlefields of Vietnam. He also founded Beheiren (Citizens' Coalition for Peace in Vietnam) with Oda Makoto and others, and actively promoted the peace movement. His powerful works based on modern history include "Shining Darkness" (68) and "Summer Darkness" (71). Other works include "Vietnam War Chronicles" (1965), "The Torn Cocoon" (1986), and "Night and Heat Haze" (1986). In 1990, the "Kaiko Takeshi Prize" was established.

小説家。大阪市立大学法学部卒業。『裸の王様』 (1957) で芥川賞を受賞。前作『パニック』 (57) 同様，工業社会における「組織と個人」という現代的なテーマを扱っている。『日本三文オペラ』 (59) では，大阪の旧陸軍工廠跡の浮浪者，貧民群の生態を描いた。その後イスラエルのアイヒマン裁判を傍聴したり，ベトナムの戦場におもむくなど，国際的な幅広い活動で知られる。また小田実らとベ平連 (「ベトナムに平和を!　市民連合」) を起し，精力的に平和運動を進めた。『輝ける闇』 (68) ，『夏の闇』 (71) など，現代史に取材した力作がある。ほかに『ベトナム戦記』 (65) ，『破れた繭』 (86) ，『夜と陽炎 (かげろう) 』 (86) など。 1990年「開高健賞」が創設された。
