An annual vine of the legume family, native to tropical Asia. Also known as butterfly pea. The stem is erect at first, covered with soft hairs, and becomes a vine at the top, reaching a length of about 5m. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, consisting of 2-4 pairs of elliptical leaflets. In summer, a single large, blue-purple, butterfly-shaped flower with a long peduncle grows from each axil of the leaf. Because of the beauty of these flowers, it is also cultivated for ornamental purposes. The fruit is a pod, and can be eaten like green beans before ripening.
