...It became famous along with the story of King Nara, one of the episodes in the ancient Indian epic poem, the Mahabharata. It is included in Book 3, Chapters 277-283 of the Mahabharata (Puna Critical Edition), and consists of 297 verses in 7 chapters. Princess Savitri, the daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra who prayed to the goddess Savitri, was engaged to Satyabhat, the prince of Dymatsena, the blind king of Sārva, but the rishis (ṛsi) predicted that the groom would die in a year and advised her to abandon him.

The Sanskrit word ṛṣi means a sage, and can also be translated as a saint-poet or a holy sage. It is said that all the verses of the Vedas that are transmitted today were not created by humans, but were heard by ancient saint-poets through mystical inspiration, as it were, of the Vedas, which have existed since time immemorial.
