A general publisher centered on the magazine Chuokoron. Its predecessor was the "Hanseikai," a training group for Nishi Honganji Temple founded in 1886. It separated from Nishi Honganji in 1912 and changed its name to Chuokoronsha in 1914. In 1916, it launched the women's magazine Fujin Koron, and published works such as Tsubouchi Shoyo's New Revised Complete Works of Shakespeare (1933) and Tanizaki Junichiro's The Tale of Genji (1939-1941). It was dissolved in 1944 by order of the Cabinet Information Bureau, but was re-established after World War II. In addition to magazines such as Chuokoron, it published various books, complete works, new books, and pocket books. In the 1990s, it attempted to launch new magazines, but these efforts were unsuccessful and its management deteriorated. In February 1999, it became a subsidiary of the Yomiuri Shimbun and changed its name to Chuokoron-Shinsha.
