A major general trading company of the Mitsubishi group. It is also a core company of the Mitsubishi Group. In 1918, the Mitsubishi Joint Stock Sales Department became independent. It was known as Mitsui & Co., Ltd., mainly for handling Mitsubishi products. After World War II, it was broken up into several dozen companies, but it quickly rebuilt and in 1954, it reintegrated its affiliated companies and became a leading general trading company. Its main products are metals, machinery, and fuel, and it handles a wide range of items including food and chemicals. It is particularly strong in oil and LNG, and is the top domestic energy supplier. It is also strong in food. Its head office is in Tokyo, and branches are in Osaka and Nagoya. In 2011, the company's capital was 204.4 billion yen, and its sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 19.2334 trillion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is as follows: new industrial finance 1, energy 20, metals 23, machinery 18, chemicals 10, and consumer goods 28.
