Bicycle thief - Bicycle thief (English spelling)

Italian film. Made in 1948. Released in Japan in 1950 (Showa 25). A masterpiece of early neorealism, directed by Vittorio De Sica (1902-74) and written by Cesare Zavattini (1902-89). An unemployed worker (Lamberto Maggiorani) gets a job on the condition that he bring his own bicycle, but when it is stolen, he and his young son (Enzo Staiola) wander around the streets of Rome searching for it. Driven to the brink, the father steals someone else's bike, while the son can only stare. De Sica used non-professional actors, rejected set-based theories, and simply depicted the two of them wandering the ruined streets of Rome after World War II. The human emotions that naturally flow from the film are sophisticated and rich, gently expressing the human figure who is about to be swept away by the harshness of reality.
