Abbreviation: Sct. A southern constellation next to Sagittarius. It is in the Milky Way and can be seen in summer in Japan. It was newly established by German astronomer J. Hevelius at the end of the 17th century and was originally called Sobieski Scutum. Sobieski was the name of the Polish King Jan III (1629-96), who led the Polish army and defeated the Turkish army. There are no bright stars, but the bright part of the Milky Way around here is called Star Cloud. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
