...A survey to determine the difference in elevation between two points (height difference). Generally, leveling is broadly divided into direct leveling and indirect leveling depending on the measurement principle. Leveling is conducted to determine the elevation of land on land, and is also conducted in conjunction with various civil engineering works such as tunnels, roads, and rivers. It is also used as a means of investigating the amount of ground subsidence caused by pumping groundwater, and of investigating the amount of crustal movement for earthquake prediction.

The surface of the water at rest in a basin is perpendicular to the direction of gravity (the plumb line).
