Sidotti - Giovanni Battista Sidotti

Sidotti - Giovanni Battista Sidotti

He was the last missionary to infiltrate Japan, where Christianity was banned. He was born in Sicily, Italy. He landed alone on Yakushima Island in October 1708 (5th year of the Hoei Era) under the orders of Pope Clement XI (reigned 1700-1721), dressed in traditional Japanese clothing and carrying a sword, but was immediately captured and sent to Nagasaki. He was then sent to Edo the following autumn in 1709, where he was imprisoned in a Christian house in Koishikawa, where he died of an illness in October 5th year of the Shotoku Era. Arai Hakuseki, a Confucian scholar who was an aide to the Shogun and who interrogated him, wrote a book on world geography called "Sairan Igen" (1713) and "Seiyo Kibun" (a record of the 1715 period, published in 1882) based on the interrogations. Although Sidotti was not able to achieve his original goal of spreading Christianity in Japan, it was an opportunity to open up the horizons of the international world to Japan, which was under a policy of national isolation.
