It refers to drinks that contain no alcohol or have a very low alcohol content. In contrast, drinks that contain alcohol are sometimes called hard drinks.

Soft drinks include soft drinks, fruit juices, lactic acid drinks, coffee, tea, and cocoa. Ginger ale, ades, squashes, shakes, floats, and ice cream parfaits and sundaes are also included.

An ade is made by adding sugar and water to natural fruit juice. If lemon is used, it is called lemonade, and if orange is used, it is called orangeade. A squash is made by mixing natural fruit juice with carbonated water. Like ades, there are lemon squash and orange squash. A shake is made by mixing fruit juice, milk, eggs, ice cream, etc. in a shaker or blender. Those made with milk are called milkshakes. A float is a drink that does not contain carbonation with ice cream or sorbet floating on top. If it is carbonated, it is usually called a cream soda.

A parfait is made by layering ice cream, sherbet, fruit, whipped cream, etc., pouring sweet sauce over it, and garnishing it with whipped cream and fruit on top. Examples include chocolate parfaits, fruit parfaits, strawberry parfaits, and pudding parfaits. A sundae is made by pouring fruit sauce or syrup over ice cream and garnishing it with fruit and whipped cream. Examples include chocolate sundaes, strawberry sundaes, and banana sundaes. The name sundae is said to come from the fact that in America, young people would put whatever they liked on top of ice cream during their relaxing time during the week, especially on Sundays.

種類

清涼飲料、果汁、乳酸飲料、コーヒー、紅茶、ココアなどがソフトドリンクの主流である。ジンジャーエール、エード、スカッシュ、シェーク（セーキ）、フロート類、それにアイスクリームの入ったパフェやサンデーなどが含まれる。

　エードは、天然果汁に砂糖と水を加えたもの。レモンを使えばレモネード、オレンジを使えばオレンジエードである。スカッシュは、天然果汁を炭酸水で割ったもの。エードと同じくレモンスカッシュ、オレンジスカッシュなどがある。シェークは、シェーカーやミキサーで果汁、牛乳、卵、アイスクリームなどを混ぜ合わせたもの。とくに牛乳を用いたものをミルクセーキという。フロートは、炭酸の入っていない飲み物にアイスクリームやシャーベットを浮かせたもの。炭酸が入っていれば普通、クリームソーダとよぶ。

　パフェは、アイスクリーム、シャーベット、果物、ホイップクリームなどを交互に重ね、甘いソースを流し、上にホイップクリームやフルーツなどを飾ったもの。チョコレートパフェ、フルーツパフェ、ストロベリーパフェ、プリンパフェなどがある。サンデーは、アイスクリームにフルーツソースやシロップをかけたり、果物やホイップクリームを飾ったりしたもの。チョコレートサンデー、ストロベリーサンデー、バナナサンデーなどがある。サンデーという名前は、アメリカで、1週間のうちとくに日曜日Sundayの憩いのひとときに、若者たちがアイスクリームの上に好きなものをのせて食べたところからきているという。
