Chojasen - Chojasen

Japanese: 長者宣 - ちょうじゃせん

During the Heian period, this was a document in the form of an imperial edict issued by the clan head. It was issued by the family steward in the form of a letter of instruction for matters concerning a particular family, and many of the letters have the phrase "choja-sen" at the end of the document. Most of the surviving documents are choja-sen of the Fujiwara clan. The power of the Tachibana clan declined in the mid-Heian period, and the Fujiwara clan came to serve as the head of the Tachibana clan as well. In this case, the clan head was called Zejo, and the imperial edict was called Zejo-sen.

平安時代，氏長者 (うじのちょうじゃ) の発する御教書 (みぎょうしょ) 形式の文書。一家一門のことに関して家司の奉書をもって出され，多く書止めに「長者宣」という文言がある。現存するものはほとんどが藤原氏の長者宣である。橘氏では平安時代中頃勢力が衰え，藤原氏が橘氏の長者を兼ねることとなった。この場合，氏長者を是定 (ぜじょう) といい，その御教書を是定宣といった。
