...C.S. Lewis dealt with issues of good and evil in his seven stories about the fictional country of Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia, 1950-56), PL Travers's five-part Mary Poppins series (1934-82) created a humorous new witch, and M. Norton also depicted a miniature world of dwarfs who live by borrowing things from humans in a five-part series (1952-82). Fantasy is the essence of British children's literature, and many excellent works were produced in the 1950s and 1960s, including P. Pearce's Tom in the Midnight Garden (1958), LM Boston's Green Knowe series (1954-76), R. Hoban's The Adventures of the Mouse and His Son (1967), A. Garner's works based on Welsh legends (1960-), and W. Mayne's The Vanishing Drummer (1966). In 1972, R. Adams wrote the animal fantasy The Rabbits of Watership Down. *Some of the terminology references "Garner, A." are listed below. Source | Heibonsha World Encyclopedia 2nd Edition | Information |
