Naval Command Department

Japanese:
Naval Command Department

In the Imperial Japanese Navy, this was the central organization that oversaw military order matters such as national defense planning and operational planning. It is equivalent to the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army. Under the Naval Staff Ordinance enacted in 1889 (Meiji 22), the Naval Staff, which was a military order organization, was placed under the Minister of the Navy, but the Naval Staff Ordinance enacted in May 1893 abolished the General Staff and established the Naval Military General Staff in its place, parallel to the Ministry of the Navy. The Chief of the Naval Military General Staff was appointed directly by an admiral or vice admiral, and was directly subordinate to the Emperor. In October 1933 (Showa 8), the Naval Military General Staff was renamed the Military General Staff, and the Chief of the Naval Military General Staff was renamed the Chief of the Military General Staff, and in October 1945 (Showa 20), it was abolished following Japan's defeat in World War II.
