Mallotus japonicus - Mallotus japonicus

Japanese:
Mallotus japonicus - Mallotus japonicus

A deciduous tall tree of the Euphorbiaceae family (APG classification: Euphorbiaceae). The trunk is upright, and while most of the trees that grow in colonies in secondary forests reach 2-3 meters, old trees can reach up to 15 meters. The leaves are alternate, basically oval, with deep or shallow lobes, 10-15 cm long and 5-15 cm wide. The young branches and leaves have soft, reddish-brown, stellate hairs. The flowers are unisexual and dioecious. In June and July, panicles are produced at the ends of the branches. The fruit is a spherical cracked fruit with soft, long spines on the surface. The bark contains the bitter substance bergenin, which is used as a gastrointestinal medicine. The same genus, Camphor tree, is known for the tapeworm repellent camara, which is extracted from the glandular and stellate hairs on the epidermis of the fruit.

The young shoots have reddish soft hairs, and in the past, the leaves were used to hold food, in the same way as oak leaves, hence the name Akamegashiwa. It grows from the Tohoku region of Honshu to Okinawa, and is also distributed in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and China.
