In 1879, she married the radical lawyer Richard Pankhurst. After her husband's death (1898), she worked as a poor commissioner and registrar, but in 1903, she and her daughters founded the Women's Social and Political Union, which aimed to win women's suffrage. They soon moved their headquarters to London and attracted attention by adopting a variety of militant guerilla tactics that were different from those of conventional moderate organizations.
