The most important ore of tin. Chemical composition: SnO 2 . Tetragonal crystal system. Usually short columnar. A collection of fine radiating crystals is called cassiterite. Friable. Yellow-brown, reddish-brown, or blackish-brown in color with a diamond or metallic luster. Mohs hardness: 6-7. Specific gravity: 6.99. Streaks: white, gray, or brown. Cassiterite is found in small amounts in granite, pegmatite, contact metasomatic deposits, and hydrothermal deposits, but tin-bearing granite weathers to form large cassiterite placer deposits in hot and humid areas such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
