Pancreatic islets transplantation

Since diabetes (type I or juvenile type) is caused by the destruction or reduction of pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans), the treatment involves removing the pancreas from a human or other animal, or isolating and transplanting islets, with the aim of restoring the endocrine function of the pancreas. There have been reports of successful transplants over several years in which patients received pancreases from siblings or parents. In cases where diabetic nephropathy is also present, a method is also used in which one kidney is transplanted at the same time. However, this has not yet become widespread.

糖尿病(I型または若年型)が膵島(ランゲルハンス島)の破壊･減少に起因することから，その治療を目的としてヒトあるいは他動物から膵臓を切除，あるいは膵島を単離して移植し，膵臓の内分泌機能の回復を図るものである。これまでに兄弟･親から膵臓の提供を受けて，患者に移植手術を行い，年余にわたる成功をおさめたとの報告もある。この際，糖尿病性腎症を伴う場合には，同時に片方の腎臓移植を行う方法もとられる。しかしまだ一般に普及するまでには至っていない。
