Japanese: 熱併給発電 - ねつへいきゅうはつでん（英語表記）steam supply and power generation

This method combines power generation and heat supply to improve the overall efficiency of energy use. It is also called combined heat and power supply or cogeneration. For example, a steam turbine is used to drive a generator at a thermal power plant, and the exhaust gas from the turbine is used for district heating. This method is widely used in European cities, where steam for heating is supplied to each home along with electricity from the power plant. Examples of this method in Japan include the Atsubetsu district of Sapporo and Hikarigaoka Park Town in Nerima Ward. Factories that use large amounts of steam often use this method for their own thermal power plants.

発電と熱の供給を組み合わせて行い総合的なエネルギー利用効率を高める方式で，熱電併給，コジェネレーションcogenerationともいう。例えば火力発電所で蒸気タービンを用いて発電機を駆動し，タービンの排気を利用して地域暖房を行う。ヨーロッパの都市では広く利用されており，各家庭に電力とともに暖房用の蒸気が発電所から供給される。日本では札幌厚別地区や練馬区光ヶ丘パークタウンなどにその例がある。また，蒸気を大量に使用する工場では自家用火力発電所をこのような方式にすることがよく行われる。
