Kachin people - Kachin (English spelling)
They call themselves the Chingpo. They live in northeastern Myanmar, northeastern Assam, and the Thanlwin River basin in the Dehongtai and Chingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, China. They speak a Tibeto-Burman language and are archaic Mongoloid in physique. Their population is estimated at about 100,000 in China and about 600,000 elsewhere, mainly in Myanmar. They cultivate upland rice, corn, millet, and buckwheat by slash-and-burn cultivation, and live mainly in mountainous areas. They have an economic and cultural symbiotic relationship with the Shan and Burmese who live in the surrounding valleys. They have a patrilineal clan structure, with eldest son inheritance, and each clan has a chief who rules a certain territory. Some villages are democratic with no class distinctions, but some have classes of nobles, commoners, and slaves. Animism is the predominant religion.
