A large evergreen shrub (illustration) of the Celastraceae family that grows in forests near the coast. It branches out many times and can reach a height of 2-4m. The leaves are opposite, leathery, thick, entire, and have short petioles. It is dioecious. Flowers appear in the leaf axils from March to April in small cymes that are greenish-white and about 5mm in diameter. Two bracteoles embrace the base of the flower. There are five almost circular petals. Male flowers have five stamens and one small, degenerate pistil in the center, while female flowers have small stamens and large, developed pistils.
