A type of carbonated drink. It is characterized by the inclusion of ginger extract, but other ingredients such as flavoring, sweeteners, and organic acids are the same as other carbonated drinks. It was a favorite drink of the British, and was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period, when production began along with ramune. It can be drunk chilled as is, mixed with whiskey or brandy, or used in cocktails. A similar drink is ginger beer, which generally has a stronger ginger flavor.
