Shigeyori

Japanese:
Shigeyori

A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Matsue clan. Commonly known as Ooyajiemon. Also known by other names Ishu. One of the Seven Immortal Haiku Poets of the Teimon school. He was said to have been a wealthy townsman who sold senji (a type of silk fabric) in Kyoto. As a boy, he learned renga (linked verse) from Shotaku, and met Soin (later the leader of the Danrin school). From the age of 20, he held a number of haiku events with people led by Teitoku, and in 1633 (Kan'ei 10), he published the first modern haiku anthology, Enokoshu. At this time, he had a conflict with co-editor Chikashige, and left Teitoku's school to become independent. He subsequently published many edited works, including the etiquette book "Kefukigusa," famous as a collection of proverbs, and "Sayo no Nakayamashu," in which Basho first appeared under the pen name Sobo. His writing style favored parodies of classics such as waka, stories, and Noh plays, and he also sought to improve and expand haiku terminology, contributing to the popularization and innovation of haiku. He spent his life engaged in debates, but produced such excellent disciples as Onitsura and Gonsui, and died on June 29, 8th year of Enpo. He was 79 years old.
