…Bioluminescence is the emission of light by living organisms with almost no heat and extremely high efficiency (97%), and is considered to be the emission of energy by the oxidation reaction of organic compounds, which is far more efficient than current artificial lighting and artificial chemiluminescence. This luminescence is distinct from phosphorescence and fluorescence, which only glow when exposed to a certain amount of light, and is produced by the reaction (called the L-L reaction) between heat-stable luciferin and unstable luciferase. The L-L reaction was discovered by Harvey EN Harvey in 1916, and firefly luciferin was isolated from the firefly Photuris pyralis by McElroy WD McElroy and others in 1957. …
