Due to the sudden rise in oil prices, there has been a growing movement since the late 1970s to diversify the chemical industry's raw material resources away from oil. One of these efforts is the so-called _C1 chemistry. There is no set definition of _C1 chemistry, but it generally refers to a system of chemical technologies that synthesize organic compounds using simple compounds with one carbon atom as raw materials, such as natural gas, steelworks gas, or synthetic gas (a gas whose main components are carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which can be obtained by gasifying natural gas, heavy petroleum oil, coal, biomass, urban waste, etc.).

石油価格の急激な上昇によって，化学工業の原料資源を石油以外に転換し，多様化しようとする動きが1970年代後半から強まった。その一つがいわゆるC₁化学である。C₁化学の定義は確定していないが，一般に天然ガス，製鉄所ガス，あるいは合成ガス(一酸化炭素と水素を主成分とするガスで，天然ガス，石油系重質残油，石炭，バイオマス，都市ごみその他をガス化して得ることができる)などの炭素数1個の単純な化合物を原料として有機化合物を合成する化学技術の体系をいう。
