An insect of the family Tettigoniidae in the order Orthoptera (illustration). A medium-sized katydid with shiny, leaf-like forewings. It lives in trees and is distributed from Honshu southward, to Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. In the Edo period, it was called "kudamaki" (winding a tube) to refer to insects such as shoe beetles and horseweeds, because their cry sounded like the sound of a spinning wheel being wound in weaving, and the name "kudamakimodoki" means that it is an insect that resembles them. The body length is about 23 mm for males and about 30 mm for females, with a forewing length of about 45 mm. The wing tip of females is about 55 mm, while males are slightly smaller.
