〘Noun〙 (sattva, living thing) A Buddhist term. ① Anything that has feelings and other mental functions. Humans, birds, animals, and other living things, as opposed to mountains, rivers, plants, and trees. ⇔ Insentient, insentient. ※Ryōiki (810-824), vol. 2: " Even if one attains enlightenment, one remains in the causal position in order to benefit sentient beings ." ※Tsurezuregusa (around 1331), vol. 128: "To see all sentient beings and not have a heart of compassion is not human morality." [Ninōgokukyō, vol. 2] ② A person who has been born into this world. ※Ojōyōshū (984-985), vol. 5: "Sentient beings possess immeasurable and boundless merit, and compared to the merit of even a single part of the Tathagata's one hundred millionth, it is not even equal to one eleventh of that." ③ Having charm. The ability to feel the pathos of things. *Hekiunko (c. 1419) Spring Rain "The banana tree outside the window, the insentient are even more sentient" [Additional note] The Sanskrit word sattva can also be translated as "sentient beings," but one theory is that "sentient beings" can be used broadly to refer to both sentient beings and non-sentient beings.Yu-jou Iu-jau [kindness]Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
