This is a large crab of the Crustacea family, Cryptodromidae, with a shell width of about 10 cm (illustration). The shell is brown, strongly raised, and densely covered with stiff short hairs. The third and fourth legs are very small and positioned on the back. It is found in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo Bay, where it hides on shallow rocks by carrying sponges on its back. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that it carries shells on its back, but this is not the case in the wild. In the Pacific Ocean south of the Kii Peninsula and the Indian Ocean, the even larger Dromidiopsis dormia , with a shell width of 20 cm, lives, but in rocky shores and shallow waters there are many smaller species such as Cryptodromia tumida , C. canaliculata , Petalomera fukuii , and P. wilsoni , which carry sponges or colonial ascidians on their backs.
