Al Shumayyil

1860‐1917
Lebanese thinker. A doctor who introduced Darwin's theory of evolution. He advocated the separation of politics and religion, and after graduating from the American University of Beirut, he wrote and contributed to scientific journals in Paris and Cairo. He envisioned the unification of the nation beyond religious differences, and sent a pamphlet to the Sultan calling for freedom of speech, social justice, and the promotion of science. He criticized both Christian theology and Cromer's criticism of Islam, taking the position that natural science is the foundation of a new society and thought. [Hayashi Takeshi]
