Spotted bat - Spotted bat

A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and family Chiropteridae in the class Insecta. Its wing span is 70-80 mm. Its forewings are blackish brown with small silvery-white markings on the transverse veins and within the middle chamber. It appears in summer and flies actively at dusk, and also comes to lights. The larvae make tunnels in paulownia, peach and other trees to infest, and pupate at the entrance to the tunnel. It is found throughout Japan, as well as in the Korean Peninsula and China.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目コウモリガ科に属するガ。はねの開張70～80ミリメートル。前翅は黒褐色で、横脈上や中室内に銀白色の小さい紋がある。夏に出現し、夕暮れどきに活発に飛び、灯火にも飛来する。幼虫はキリ、モモそのほかの樹木にトンネルをつくって加害し、トンネルの入口で蛹化(ようか)する。日本全土のほか朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。
