A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and family Chiropteridae in the class Insecta. Its wing span is 70-80 mm. Its forewings are blackish brown with small silvery-white markings on the transverse veins and within the middle chamber. It appears in summer and flies actively at dusk, and also comes to lights. The larvae make tunnels in paulownia, peach and other trees to infest, and pupate at the entrance to the tunnel. It is found throughout Japan, as well as in the Korean Peninsula and China.
