Jangara

Japanese: じゃんがら

The name of a folk dance associated with the sounds of gongs and drums. On August 18th, the "Jangara" in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a parade through the city with flags, flutes, gongs, and drums, and dances to pray for a good harvest are performed at each dance stage. The "Jangara Nembutsu" in the Hira area of Iwaki City, held from August 14th to 16th, is a Nembutsu dance that is said to have been popularized by the monk Yuten in the early Edo period, and young people go around the houses of those who are celebrating the New Bon Festival and dance to the sounds of gongs and drums.

鉦(かね)や太鼓の音にちなむ民俗舞踊の名称。８月18日の長崎県平戸市の〈じゃんがら〉は，幟(のぼり)，笛，鉦，太鼓の順に市内を練り歩き，各所の踊り場で豊年祈願の踊りを踊る。８月14〜16日のいわき市平地方の〈じゃんがら念仏〉は，江戸初期祐天上人がひろめたという念仏踊で，若者たちが新盆の家を回り鉦，太鼓に合わせて踊る。
