"The Virgin Mary of Vladimir" - Vladimir's Mother

"The Virgin Mary of Vladimir" - Vladimir's Mother

In the 13th century, this supernatural dignity was replaced by a more graceful expression of charity, and from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, spirituality faded, and the Virgin Mary generally became a beautiful woman with a strong human touch (such as Raphael's Madonna). In the East, the expression of supernatural and mystical spirituality was a long-standing tradition in the depiction of the Virgin Mary (such as the Vladimir Madonna, c. 1130), but with the introduction of Western realism from around the 17th century, it began to degenerate into vulgarity.
[Narrative imagery]
The narrative images can be broadly divided into three sections: the life of Mary before the birth of Christ, the time of Christ, and Mary's later years.

From [Russian and Soviet Art]

...The tendency to prefer dark colors and clear contours was already evident in the 12th century frescoes near Novgorod. Meanwhile, in the northeastern region around Vladimir, a style was forming that reflected a highly spiritual national sentiment while maintaining the Byzantine Orthodox traditions, modelled on the Vladimir Virgin Mary, a gift from Byzantium. However, since the invasion of foreign tribes in the 13th century, Vladimir has been plagued by constant destruction and reconstruction.
