On September 8, 1380, the combined forces of Russian princes led by Grand Duke Dmitry of Moscow (grandson of Ivan Kalita) met the forces of Khan Mamai of the Golden Horde on the field of Kulikovo in the tributary of the Don River. This was the first armed confrontation to occur in the middle of the 230-year "Tatar Yoke." In a short period of time, from just after noon until around 3:00 p.m., 100,000 Russian troops and 130,000 to 150,000 Khan troops clashed on a field measuring 6 to 7 km square, resulting in a great victory for Russia, but heavy losses, with half of the soldiers lost and funerals on the battlefield taking eight days.
