Date of birth and death unknown. A Tendai scholar and Shintoist from the end of the Kamakura period to the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Urabe Kaneaki, who served in Shinto rituals. Older brother of Kenko, the priest of "Tsurezuregusa." A Tendai scholar, he was enlightened to Shinto by a divine dream. He was knowledgeable in Watarai (Ise) Shinto, and along with the Watarai family priests, he stood on the side of the Southern Court, preaching a theory that was centered on Japan and Shinto, with the position that Shinto and Buddhism were one. The famous Shinto, Confucian, and Buddhist teachings, "The Theory of the Root, Branches, Leaves, Flowers, and Fruits," which is said to be the theory of Urabe Kanetomo (Yoshida Kanetomo), were actually preached by Jippen. He was summoned by Emperor Godaigo of the Southern Court to preach Buddhism and Shinto. He was later appointed as Daisojo. Many of his other works, including "Toyoashihara Kamikazewaki," "The Mysterious Meaning of the Kujihongi," "Mitsubo Sojo Shinyosho," and "Tenchi Jingi Shinchin Yoki," no longer exist.
