It has long been used as the shortest route between the Inn and Rhine rivers, but in 1884, a 10,240m-long railway tunnel was built between Sankt Anton and Langen just below the pass, making it an important route for east-west railway traffic in the Eastern Alps. In 1978, a 14km-long automobile tunnel was also completed.
