Kim Satkat

Kim Satkat
1807‐63
A wandering poet from the late Yi Dynasty of Korea. He was nicknamed Kim Sakka (Golden Hat) because he wandered around the country wearing a satkat hat. His real name was Kim Byeong-yeon. His poems were often unconventional, mixing Hangeul, making full use of on-the-spot and kun-yin plays, and skillfully linking the superficial meaning of the words with the hidden meaning when read aloud. At times he harshly mocked the yangban class and social authority, and at other times he humorously lamented the poor lives of the common people. It is said that this critical spirit came from the fact that his grandfather defected to the peasant army during the Hong Gyeong-rae Rebellion, and that his family was blocked from success.
