Founded in 1611 by the Dominican Order in Manila, Philippines, it is one of the oldest universities in Asia. It was originally called Our Lady of the Rosary College, but was later renamed Santo Tomas College, and then elevated to a university status by Pope Innocent X in 1645. The Philippines had an earlier college, San Ignacio College, founded by the Jesuits in 1589 and elevated to university status in 1621, but was closed when the Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1768.
