The society was originally a private enterprise by Stein, but in 1871, during the time of Bismarck, it was reorganized as a national enterprise, and under the supervision of a succession of leading historians, such as Georg Waitz (1813-1886), Wilhelm Wattenbach (1819-1897), and Ernst Dümmler (1830-1902), it achieved great success internationally, and its ambitious work continues to this day. The Monumenta Germaniae Historica is divided into five sections according to the nature of the historical materials: the Scriptores (SS), the Leges (LL), the Diplomata (DD), the Epistolae (EPP), and the Antiquities (AA).
