...It is still continuing to this day, and is the most fundamental major publication in the study of medieval history. The society was originally a private enterprise by Stein, but in 1871, during the time of Bismarck, it was reorganized as a national enterprise, and under the supervision of a succession of leading historians, such as Georg Waitz (1813-1886), Wilhelm Wattenbach (1819-1897), and Ernst Dümmler (1830-1902), it achieved great success internationally, and its ambitious work continues to this day. The Monumenta Germaniae Historica is divided into five sections according to the nature of the historical materials: the Scriptores (SS), the Leges (LL), the Diplomata (DD), the Epistolae (EPP), and the Antiquities (AA). Each section is further divided into several smaller sections, and the historical materials are published in the order in which they have been criticized or compiled, and are mixed in folio and quarto editions.
