Sardegna (province)

Japanese: サルデーニャ[州]（英語表記）Sardegna

An island located in the western Mediterranean Sea, it is the second largest in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily, and together with the neighboring islands, it is a region of the Republic of Italy. In English it is called Sardinia, and has an area of 24,090 km2 and a population of 1.66 million (1994). Its capital is Cagliari. Each Italian region has a strong regional character due to differences in natural conditions and historical background, and under the post-World War II republican constitution, a considerable degree of regional autonomy has been achieved. However, due to its isolation as an island and the historical circumstances of being under Spanish rule for four centuries from the 14th century, Sardinia has a society and culture that is very different from other Italian regions.

西部地中海に位置する島で，地中海ではシチリア島につぐ面積をもち，付近の属島とともにイタリア共和国の一州をなしている。英語ではサルディニアSardiniaと呼び，面積2万4090km2，人口166万(1994)。主都はカリアリ。イタリアの各州はそれぞれ自然条件，歴史的背景の違いによって地方色が強く，第2次大戦後の共和国憲法のもとで，かなりの程度の州自治が実現されているが，サルデーニャはその島嶼としての孤立性と14世紀から4世紀間にわたってスペイン治下にあったという歴史的事情から，イタリアの他の州とはきわめて異なる社会･文化をもっている。
