The differences between camellias and tsubaki are that sasanquas generally have smaller leaves, hairs on the twigs, petioles and mid-veins, they start to bloom in late autumn, their flowers are fragrant, their petals are thin and wavy, and they fall apart, and their ovaries and fruits are hairy. There are over 120 horticultural varieties, and the flower colors vary from white to pale pink and deep red. Representative varieties include the single-flowered Oomigoromo, Hinohakama, Tsuki no Kasa, and Meigetsu, and the double-flowered and thousand-flowered Fuji no Mine and Showa no Sakae. In addition to being ornamental, the wood is used to make musical instruments and folding rules, and oil is extracted from the seeds. 本州（山口県）〜沖縄に自生するツバキ科の常緑小高木で，約10mの高さになる。庭木として植込みや生垣にし，切花にも用いる。ツバキとの違いは，一般にサザンカのほうが葉が小さく，小枝から葉柄，主脈に毛がある点，晩秋から咲き始め，花に芳香があり，花弁が薄く波うち，ばらばらに散る点，子房，果実に毛がある点などである。園芸品種は120種余り，花色は白，淡紅，濃紅等の変異がある。代表品種には一重咲の御美衣(おおみごろも)・緋の袴(ひのはかま)・月の笠(かさ)・明月，八重咲・千重咲の富士の峰・昭和栄(しようわのさかえ)等。観賞以外の用途としては材が楽器や折尺にされ，種子からは油をとる。なお，ハルサザンカは本種とツバキの雑種と考えられている。
