Gyoden - Gyoden

The name of a palace in the Heian Palace. It is located to the east of the Shishinden. It is a cypress bark-roofed building that faces west, with eaves on all four sides of the main building, which is nine bays from north to south and two from east to west, and a grand eaves on the east. The main building is called the Osame-dono, and books, musical instruments, and other imperial possessions were stored there. The Pillow Book states that at the time, when praising something good, the expression "Ichi no Tana ni in the Giyo-den" was used. The nobles' seat was located to the north of the west wing, and the ministers' accommodations were located in the east wing. The council office was located to the west of the south wing, and was the place where nobles gathered for investiture and appointment ceremonies. A restored version of this building from the Edo period remains in the current Kyoto Imperial Palace.

平安宮内裏(だいり)の殿舎の名。紫宸殿(ししんでん)の東にある。檜皮葺(ひわだぶ)きで南北9間、東西2間の母屋(もや)の四面に廂(ひさし)、東に孫廂がある西向きの建物。母屋を納殿(おさめどの)といい、書物、楽器などの御物が納められ、『枕草子(まくらのそうし)』には、当時よいものを褒めるとき「宜陽殿の一の棚に」という言い方があった、と記されている。西廂の北側には公卿(くぎょう)座、東廂には大臣の宿所などがあった。南廂の西側には議所があり、叙位・除目(じもく)の際の公卿の集合場所となった。現在の京都御所には、この殿舎を江戸時代に復原したものが残っている。
