Mount Arafune

A volcano in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture, bordering Nagano Prefecture. It is 1,423 meters above sea level. On top of the Tertiary layer there is andesite and tuff, and the summit is a flat basalt lava plateau about 1,400 meters north to south and 400 meters east to west, with the northern end of the plateau forming a cliff about 170 meters high. Arafuneyama Shrine is located on this plateau. It is said that the shrine was named after its striking shape, which resembles a ship sailing on rough seas. In Nagano Prefecture, it is called Toyama, likening it to a grindstone. It belongs to Myogi Arafune Saku Kogen Quasi-National Park, and there is a good hiking course by bus and on foot from Shimonita Station on the Joshin Dentetsu line from Takasaki. Kozu Ranch is located to the north.

群馬県南西部、長野県境に接する火山。標高1423メートル。第三紀層の上に、安山岩や凝灰岩があり、山頂は南北約1400メートル、東西約400メートルの平坦(へいたん)な玄武岩の溶岩台地で、台地の北端は約170メートルの絶壁になっている。この台地上に荒船山神社がある。形がひときわ目だち、荒海を行く船の形にみえるのでこの名がついたという。長野県では砥石(といし)に例えて砥山(とやま)という。妙義(みょうぎ)荒船佐久高原国定公園に属し、高崎から上信電鉄下仁田(しもにた)駅下車、バスと徒歩による好適のハイキングコース。北方に神津(こうづ)牧場がある。
